Board games: the gym for the brain
Games that require planning several moves ahead train exactly the muscle programming needs. Chess is the obvious one, but simpler options work too: any game where the child must predict what happens next, weigh options and accept the consequence of a choice. The key is that they think, not you — resist the urge to rescue every bad move.
"Robot and programmer": coding with no computer
One of the best exercises we use, and it needs nothing at all. One person is the robot and only obeys literal instructions. The other is the programmer and must direct them across the room — "step forward, turn right, step forward" — to pick up an object.
Children discover instantly why precision matters: say "go over there" and the robot does not move. This is decomposition, sequencing and debugging, learned through laughter.
LEGO challenges: engineering on the carpet
- Constraint building: "a bridge that holds a book, using only 30 pieces."
- Copy the model: one child builds hidden, then describes it in words for another to reproduce — pure communication practice.
- Fix it: deliberately build something unstable and ask them to diagnose why.
Digital options — chosen carefully
Screens are not the enemy, but the choice matters. Prefer anything where the child builds rather than consumes: block-based coding playgrounds, logic puzzles, simple circuit simulators. The test is simple — at the end, is there something they made?
