FIRA Challenge — Robots as Rescuers and Helpers

FIRA Challenge is the branch of FIRA that steps away from sport and tests robots in applied roles: rescuer, domestic helper, assistant. The question is not how fast the robot is, but how useful.

Common members

  • Smart Home — the best-known member for Iranian audiences; the robot performs missions in a house-like arena. Full guide here.
  • Rescue missions — traversing difficult terrain and locating targets.
  • Service robot — everyday tasks in a human environment.
  • Mission-based challenges whose theme changes each edition.

Being a "challenge" branch by nature, its composition varies more than the rest of FIRA. That year's call is the only reliable reference.

What all challenges share

In every one, the robot must complete a full chain unaided: perceive the environment, decide, move, interact with an object and deliver a result. Failure at any link nullifies the chain — which is what makes these harder than single-skill events.

The core lesson of this branch: reliability beats innovation. A robot doing something simple correctly 95% of the time outscores one doing something complex 40% of the time. Experienced teams complete and harden the chain first, then add advanced features.

Skills required

  • Sensor fusion — colour, distance, camera and sometimes sound.
  • Navigation in semi-structured environments — a home or a simulated incident site.
  • Object manipulation — a light, dependable gripper or arm.
  • Error handling — what if the object did not seat in the gripper?
  • Mission time management.

Compared with RoboCup@Home

RoboCup@Home implements the same idea at university level with expensive robots. FIRA Challenge's advantage is school-age brackets and entry with accessible hardware — a far more realistic starting point for Iranian teams.

Novin Zehn's record

Novin Zehn teams hold several international placings in the FIRA Smart Home league, including first place in both U14 and U19 at FIRA Cup Iran 2026. The academy's preparation track for it starts with the smart home course.

Frequently asked questions

What does FIRA Challenge include?

A set of applied challenges such as Smart Home, rescue missions and service robots. The exact mix changes each edition.

Do we need a robotic arm?

In most challenges yes, since object interaction is part of the mission — but a simple, light mechanism usually outperforms a complex arm.

What ages does it serve?

One of its advantages is school-age brackets such as U14 and U19 in leagues like Smart Home.
