RoboCup Industrial — @Work and the Logistics League

RoboCup's Industrial branch makes less noise than robot football, but it is the most job-relevant part of the event. Here the robot neither plays nor rescues — it works.

RoboCup@Work — the workshop robot

The arena is a small industrial workshop. A mobile robot with an arm must:

  • collect parts from one station and deliver them to another;
  • place a part with high precision into a fixture with only millimetres of clearance;
  • pick a part off a rotating table;
  • and do all of it in an environment with obstacles and unplanned changes.

The core skill is combining mobile navigation with precise manipulation — exactly what the newest generation of industrial robots does.

The Logistics League (RCLL) — warehouse and production

Here several mobile robots must run a small production line. Machining stations are distributed across the field and each "product" must pass through a specific sequence to be completed. Orders are announced during the match, so robots must decide what to build first.

This is really a scheduling problem: which robot takes which job? How do you avoid conflicts? What if a station is busy? That is precisely the problem solved in robotic warehouses and smart factories — and unlike robot football, the output is directly sellable to industry.

The skills built here — industrial navigation, arm motion planning, multi-robot scheduling, integration with production management systems — are exactly what automation companies hire for. Many teams in these leagues work directly with industry.

Both leagues are university level and equipment-heavy. But the underlying concepts — navigation, part-recognition vision and arm control — are learnable in advanced robotics and computer vision courses, and are the genuine prerequisite for entering this branch.
