Visually, the Middle Size League (MSL) is RoboCup's closest league to real football: a large pitch, large wheeled robots, a standard ball and genuinely hard shots. But its defining property is something else — no external help at all.
Full autonomy
Each robot must see, decide and move by itself. Every sensor is onboard and all processing happens on the robot. Robots exchange information with teammates over the network — exactly like players talking on the pitch.
The hard parts
- 360-degree vision: most teams use an omnidirectional mirror camera so the robot sees all around itself at once.
- Localisation on a large field: with substantial odometry error, the robot constantly corrects its position by matching field lines.
- High-speed omnidirectional motion: accelerating and braking hard without tipping.
- Dribbling and kicking: holding the ball while moving, then shooting powerfully and accurately.
- Team tactics: passing, covering and switching roles automatically.
Why it matters
MSL develops technology that transfers directly to service robots and autonomous vehicles: navigating dynamic environments, real-time decision-making and coordinating independent robots. If one league is "closest to industrial mobile robotics", this is it.
Entering from Iran
University level and expensive — but its simulation and algorithm side can be practised with open-source tools. For students, the logical route is Junior Soccer, then simulation.
Frequently asked questions
How does MSL differ from the Small Size League?
Small Size uses an overhead camera and an off-field computer; in Middle Size everything is onboard and decision-making is fully distributed.
Is it suitable for school students?
No, it is university level — but its concepts can be learned through simulation leagues.
How do the robots coordinate?
Over a wireless network, sharing their own and the ball’s position and agreeing roles — with no human commands.
