Weight classes
Events typically run several weight classes, from a few hundred grams for beginners upward. The light classes suit students best: lower cost, lower risk and buildable with simple tools.
Class structures and which mechanisms are permitted vary by event — always read that edition's call.
Three design schools
- Pusher / wedge: a wedge body that slides under the opponent and drives them out. Simple, robust and surprisingly effective.
- Lifter / flipper: a mechanism that lifts or flips the opponent out of balance.
- Striker: spinning or hammering mechanisms — powerful but fragile and power-hungry.
Engineering skills built
- Motor and gearbox selection: balancing torque against speed — the first lesson in practical mechanics.
- Structural strength: where to reinforce and where to shed weight.
- Centre of gravity and traction: motor power is useless if the wheels spin.
- Power management: battery, current draw and driver heat.
- Fast repair: minutes between bouts — the design must be serviceable.
Arena strategy
Despite appearances, robot combat is closer to wrestling than boxing. The key principles: always face the opponent (your flank is the weak point), steer them toward the arena edge, and do not burn the battery in the opening seconds.
Educational value
Fighter robots may look like the least technological league, but it is the best practical mechanical engineering class available. Students meet torque, friction, structural stress and power management not as formulas but as tangible experience — with immediate feedback.

Is it dangerous?
