1. Live, not recorded
Recorded videos are a study tool, not a class. A class means a real teacher in real time, answering questions, watching faces, adjusting pace. If the "online class" is just a video library plus a discussion forum, it's not what you're paying for.
2. Small cohort, not a webinar
If there are 80 students on the call and the teacher can't possibly know your child's name — that's a lecture. Real classes have a small cohort (typically 4–12 students) where each kid is seen, called on, and known.
3. Camera-on culture
Cameras off means engagement gone. Good online programs require cameras on for students. Sounds small; it's the difference between a real class and a child secretly playing a game with the teacher's voice in the background.
4. Project-based deliverables
Every week or every two weeks, something concrete is built. Not just "we covered the topic." A finished project — even tiny — is what makes online learning stick. Without it, the class evaporates from memory by Friday.
5. Real-time parent dashboard
You should be able to log in any time and see: attendance, project status, the teacher's notes on your child, and the recording of the last class. Without a real dashboard, you're trusting marketing copy over evidence.
6. Time-zone respect
This one matters specifically for diaspora families. A program that schedules every class in Tehran morning time doesn't work for Toronto, Vancouver, or Berlin. Look for programs that schedule across multiple time zones — and offer makeup options if you miss one.
7. Real interaction between students
The best online classes have students collaborating — pair programming, team projects, peer code reviews. A class where students only talk to the teacher is missing half the value of being in a class at all.
8. A clear arc, not endless content
"We just keep learning" is a polite way of saying there's no destination. A good program has a season arc, a year arc, and a multi-year path. You and your child can see where they're headed.
