Here's the realistic path from "my kid is curious about robots" to "my kid is competing at an international event" — written from 14 years of guiding teens through exactly this journey.
Year 1 — Foundations and the first finished thing
Months 1–3 — Discovery (Season 1)
Pick a league. We strongly recommend not over-thinking this; whatever your teen is most curious about wins. The first season is about basic skills: vocabulary of the field, simple builds, learning how a class flows. End-of-season project: a small but finished thing. A line-following robot. A first webpage. A working Scratch game. The certificate matters less than the moment your teen says, "I built that."
Months 4–6 — Depth (Season 2)
Concepts get harder. Patience is tested. This is the season most students secretly want to quit — and the season where parental support matters most. Your job: notice the small wins. Ask questions. Don't compare. End of season: a slightly more ambitious project. A robot that does two things. A website with three pages and a form. A small Python program that solves a real problem.
Months 7–9 — Build (Season 3)
Tools are now familiar. Confidence is real. Your teen starts having opinions about how things should be built. This is the season where you watch the engineer-mind taking shape. Project: more sophisticated, more original. Often the first thing they want to show relatives.
Months 10–12 — Shine (Season 4)
The end of year one. The exhibition or an internal competition. For competitive leagues, the first regional event. Even if they don't medal, they walk away knowing what a competition feels like. That single experience changes them.
Year 2 — Specialization and the medal year
Months 13–15 — Reset and aim
Now they know what they like. Specialize. Move from "general Python" to "Python + AI" or "Python + game dev." From "basic robotics" to "competitive robotics" or "smart cars." This is the year their voice in conversation starts sounding more like a professional than a student.
Months 16–18 — Project of significance
One real project that takes a season to build. Could be a competition robot. Could be an app. Could be an AI model. The key shift: this is no longer just "this season's project" — it's "the thing I'm building." Goes into a portfolio.
Months 19–21 — Competition prep
For competitive teens: intensive coaching, simulation runs, team-building, mentorship from senior coaches. For non-competitive teens: a public showcase project, applying for university summer programs, building a serious portfolio. Both lead to the same moment.
Months 22–24 — The stage
Competition day. Or the year-end exhibition. Or a national olympiad. Or a university summer program. The medal isn't the point — the experience is the point. Whatever the result, they walk off the stage a different person. From there, the next two years are an acceleration.
