The science of why 6–12 matters
Research from the MIT Media Lab and Stanford's Graduate School of Education shows that between 6 and 12, the brain is at peak neuroplasticity. Neurons form connections far faster than in adulthood. Logical thinking, algorithmic thinking, the ability to break a big problem into smaller ones — the very habits that sit at the heart of coding — are laid down precisely in this window. Whatever foundation is built here tends to last a lifetime.
Professor Seymour Papert, an MIT mathematician and computer scientist, pioneered this view. In the 1980s, with the Logo programming language, he showed that even a 6-year-old could grasp complex geometric ideas through code. His theory of Constructionism is still the basis for how children's coding is taught worldwide.

Why this is even more important for diaspora kids
If your family lives in Toronto, Berlin, Los Angeles, or anywhere else far from Tehran, your child already crosses two cultures every day. Coding gives them something steady that travels: a skill the world values regardless of accent, last name, or which language they dream in. It also creates a peer network — Iranian kids in Vancouver building with Iranian kids in Hamburg — that no expat parent group can replicate.
Four age tracks and what they actually do
- Ages 6 to 8 — Scratch and block coding: the focus here is logical thinking, sequencing, and interactive storytelling. Your child drags and drops blocks, builds their first animations and simple games. The screen becomes a maker's tool, not a passive one.
- Ages 9 to 11 — Introducing Python: the jump from blocks to typed code is the most important leap of this period. Variables, conditionals, loops, and small projects using Python's Turtle graphics. They feel like a "real" programmer for the first time.
- Ages 12 to 14 — Real projects: simple websites, Pygame games, even first AI experiments. Engineering thinking takes shape. Your child can ship something a relative in another city can actually use.

Signs your child is ready
Every child has their own rhythm. But these five signals are reliable: enjoyment of puzzles and logic games; the patience to follow a multi-step story; frequent "why?" and "how?" questions about digital tools; the ability to sit with one activity for 20 minutes; and basic fluent reading in English or Persian. If you see most of these in your child, you're ready to start.
Five mistakes diaspora parents make
- Waiting for high school: many parents save coding for the SAT/IB years — exactly when there's no room for deep learning. Start earlier.
- The wrong first language: handing C++ to an 8-year-old is a quick way to kill interest forever. Language must match age.
- Expecting fast results: coding is a long game. Three months in, your patience matters more than your child's talent.
- Leaving them with YouTube alone: no teacher, no project, no feedback — and about 90% drop off. The medium is not the lesson.
- Comparison with cousins, classmates, or that one kid on Instagram: nothing kills intrinsic motivation faster.
The parent's role — even if you don't code
You don't need to be a programmer to be the most important factor in your child's progress. Fifteen minutes a week — looking at their project, asking a real question, and offering honest encouragement — is enough. A child who feels their parent cares about their small wins develops intrinsic motivation that multiplies everything else.
