The Humanoid League is where RoboCup's 2050 goal actually lives. Robots must be human-shaped: two legs, two arms, and crucially only sensors a human has an equivalent of. No overhead camera, no pre-built map, no external help.
Divisions
- KidSize — smaller robots, the largest field of teams and the most exciting matches.
- AdultSize — large, heavy robots where every fall can cost weeks of repair.
The division structure has been reorganised in recent years; that edition's rules are always the authority.
Why it is so hard
1. Balance
A wheeled robot that stops, stands. A biped that does nothing, falls. Bipedal walking means continuously controlling an inherently unstable system, dozens of times per second, on artificial turf that gives underfoot.
2. Getting up
In a real match, robots fall. A team whose robots stand up quickly and reliably effectively fields more players. It is one of the biggest separators between top teams and the rest.
3. Vision from ground level
The camera sits on the robot's head — low and shaking. Detecting the ball, field lines and goal from that angle is far harder than from above.
4. Localisation
With no GPS and no colour markers, the robot must work out where it stands purely by matching what it sees against its model of the field.
What has reached industry
Balance and locomotion algorithms developed in this league now appear in service robots, smart prosthetics and commercial humanoids. It is one of the few places where the research frontier and the competition field are genuinely the same thing.
Entering from Iran
This is a university-level league needing a lab, a budget and a multi-person team. For a school student the realistic route is FIRA HuroCup or a simulation league, which teach the same control and vision concepts far more cheaply.
